What is Shanks sword called?
Shanks’ sword is called Gryphon (sometimes translated as Griffon), a named blade that has accompanied the Red-Haired Pirate since his earliest appearances in One Piece. Although Eiichiro Oda has revealed very little about its history, Gryphon is widely recognized as one of the series’ most iconic swords thanks to its elegant saber-like design and its association with one of the Four Emperors.
Unlike many fans initially suspected, Gryphon has never been confirmed to possess a Devil Fruit power. Its incredible strength comes from Shanks himself, whose exceptional swordsmanship and overwhelming Haki allow him to clash evenly with some of the world’s strongest fighters. Every major attack shown so far suggests that Gryphon serves as the perfect medium for Shanks’ mastery of Armament and Conqueror’s Haki rather than relying on any supernatural ability of its own.
Another common question is whether Gryphon once belonged to Gol D. Roger. The answer is no. Roger wielded a different sword named Ace, a Supreme Grade blade that is distinct from Gryphon. While Shanks was a former apprentice aboard Roger’s ship and inherited Roger’s famous straw hat, there is no official evidence that he also inherited Roger’s sword. Gryphon appears to be Shanks’ own personal weapon, making it a unique symbol of the captain of the Red Hair Pirates.
